When our daughter was learning to read, one of the things that kept her encouraged was gaining the ability to read the American Girl chapter books by herself. Many nights we would read a chapter out of one of the books for a bedtime story. This led to her loving American Girl and their dolls and learning about each one. Each historical doll has their own unique time period and six books about their lives.  The back of each book contains information about the time period.  Many historical girls also have a book about what it was like to grow up in their world with old photos and facts and details about what things costs and how things looked.

We spent a lot of time at the library so that we could read all the girl’s stories. We also spent evenings as a family watching the movies based on the books. We eventually purchased many of the books and movies for our home library to enjoy.

All of the historical characters are based in a particular time period and they are all well-done. Here are some of our favorites:

Many homeschoolers have used American Girl for unit studies based around historic time periods or subjects. We created lapbooks using the themes in many of these books.  You can find printable lapbook parts for many of the American Girl stories at HomeschoolShare.

Here we used Kit to do a study around journalism and living in the depression era.
